Ayurveda, a traditional Indian Medicine system believes that the imbalance/pain originates in the mind in the form of some negative emotion which in turn the affects the body. It emphasis that the doshic (vata, pitta, kapha) imbalances usually rest upon an excess of Gunas (rajas or tamas), which in turn reflect deeper karmic disharmonies leading to pain.

Traditional Ayurveda recognizes below mentioned factors as the main causes of any sort of diseases/pain :

a) Doshic imbalances, either by constitution or by external factors :

The doshas as they accumulate as toxins have negative emotional components like Vata as fear, Pitta as anger and Kapha as attachment. Pain of any type first imbalances Vata, so pain management of any type will involve a strong component of anti-Vata consideration.

b) Excess of rajas and tamas in the mind.

The three gunas are mainly psychological factors with rajas as ego-driven impulses and tamas as deeper emotional blockages, insensitivity or addictions.

c) Karmic factors or results of previous actions.

Ayurveda thus has an integrated approach to treat any sort of pain by

  • Removing the doshas and increasing sattva guna but also eliminating the negative karmas which sustain them in our own behavior.
  • Calming the chitta (mental disturbances), developing the buddhi (discriminating intelligence), controlling the manas (outer mental activity) and reducing ahamkara(ego).
Ayurveda teaches us to harmonize the mind and to return to the Self behind the mind and its stream of thoughts. The power of mind can overcome any physical aberrations, along with the ayurvedic treatment, an organized life style, exercises, yoga and meditation, medical counseling and stress management effectively contributes towards early recovery from any sort of pain.
