A blog about wheatgrass health benefits

wheatgrass health benefitsHerbal Remedies for 7 Common Winter Ailments

This is the beautiful world of Herbal Medicine or Herbal Therapy. Nature's medicine is simply the best option available to prevent and treat certain illnesses and ailments, since this is valuable substance provided by the land.

Many of the herbal treatments still in use today have been passed down through the generations. A vast majority of the pharmacological concoctions we find "over the counter" in the drugstores are derived from the roots of herbal medicine. With that in mind, it stands to note that we should learn more about the original herbal treatments to use for ourselves now.

Since many man-made medicines for common ailments are now unavailable for children, there is no better time than now to get your child on a holistic path to optimum health and wellness with the use of natural treatments.

During the tough cold and flu season, there are a lot of "Grandma's recipes" that still work beautifully for you and your family. Here is a short list for your consideration:

BRONCHITIS

Try two teaspoons of Horehound per one cup of boiling water. Add lemon and licorice to taste.

COLDS AND FLU

At the first sign of sniffles, immediately ingest Echinacea. There are over 200 viruses that can cause the common cold, which are shared by coughing, sneezing and by hand. Therefore, the first treatment is prevention! Wash hands often and well, using a good anti-bacterial soap.

Eating garlic can help in the prevention of colds and flu.

Here is another remedy: Pour a cup of boiling water over a couple of tablespoons of fresh, shredded Ginger Root. It makes a good hot tea that is effective against the most common cold viruses.

COUGHING

Slice a large onion into rings. Place in deep bowl. Cover the slices with organic honey. Allow to stand overnight. In the morning, strain the liquid... it creates a simple and natural cough elixir.

DRY SKIN PROBLEMS

In addition to Aloe, the best known herb for skin treatment, try Evening Primrose Oil. Apply directly to the irritation. You should be able to find this in your local health food store.

EARACHE

Taken internally, Garlic can help cure a middle ear infection. A few drops of Garlic oil in the ear can't hurt either. You can also try using a teaspoon of dried Echinacea in tea

FEVER

Two to three teaspoons of Elder flowers a day in tea will help reduce feverish chills. Try Ginger tea or eat candied ginger or sip ginger ale. Add peppermint to fever-fighting teas.

SORE THROAT

Slipper Elm capsules will do the trick for a raging sore throat. Just remember that it is the possibility of a cold, flu or strep throat to follow. Another treatment is a few teaspoons of crushed Eucalyptus leaves per cup of boiling water for a soothing tea.

Be sure to discuss the herbal discipline you plan to use with your health practitioner. There are many of them cannot be taken with certain pharmaceuticals. Some herbs cannot be taken with other herbs. If your health practitioner is not educated or interested in herbal therapy, be sure to find a good herbalist with whom you can also share your plans and concerns.

Make sure that your physician AND your herbalist are fully aware of all medications and/or herbal treatments you are using.
